This spot is on the Fidalgo Island side of Deception Pass State Park. The park surrounds the tall bridge spanning the water way between Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands. You can see Rosario Beach and resort on the right.
Shooting into the sun is always a challenge. You end up with harsh shadows and hot spots – an extremely high contrast scene. Shooting in RAW is essential to fixing very bright and dark areas.
There is a neat little peninsula that extends above Rosario Beach. Google Maps doesn’t have a name on it, so I’ll call it Rosario Point. It offers some great views! I gotta say though, when you have a fearless 3-year-old toddling around with 50-foot drops nearby… I had to shoot quick and spend most of my time keeping her away from the edge!
The island to the right is Deception Island, and directly across from it on the left, is the opening to Deception Pass. This view is from the top of Rosario Point, as I’m calling it. This was mid afternoon, and I can imagine these scenes would be even more stunning as the sun gets closer to the horizon.
The next post will show the Whidbey Island side of Deception Pass.
